Album review: Blood Orange — Coastal Grooves

Blood Orange: Coastal Grooves

Conceived in New York, Coastal Grooves is UK composer, producer and performer Devonté Hynes’ debut album under the moniker Blood Orange. Hynes who also performs as Lightspeed Champion, has written on hit CDs for The Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx among others, but Coastal Grooves is more Big Apple underground than British big beat. A mix tape-style soundtrack for a seedy night out, opener “Forget It” with its plaintiff cry of “I’m not your saviour” has pop overtones, while “Sutphin Boulevard” and “Can We Go Inside Now” blend an oriental-cum-country flavour in a dark, quirky fashion. Surprises at every turn.
