Hollie Smith and Mara TK / Band of Brothers Vol: 1 — Album review

New Zealand singer songwriter Hollie Smith released a collaboration with Kiwi production whizz Mara TK in 2011, the first in a series of such projects apparently.

Hollie Smith and Mara TK / Band of Brothers Vol: 1

The first in a series of collaborative projects designed to allow Kiwi singer-songwriter Hollie Smith room to experiment, Band of Brothers Vol: 1 is nevertheless dominated by her trademark vocals. Mara TK’s (Electric Wire Hustle) quirky production skills and subtle arrangements are a far cry from the brassy live sound oft associated with Smith, but that voice whether applied in breathless swirls, set back in the mix or harmonised with Mara, is still as beguiling as ever and that ain’t no bad thing. Soaring 60s-esque epic “Promise Land Hotel (Pt 1 and Pt2)” and the spooky “Transcendence” are favourite tracks. Keep a look out for Vol:2!
